Marithel — Saltglass, Optics, Mirrors, and Beacon Craft
Saltglass is the most famous Maritheli craft tradition and the easiest to misunderstand.
It is not one magical substance.
It is a family of glass, mirror, optical, signal, and beacon practices whose value comes from exact workmanship, calibration, installation, record, and access.
Saltglass is Marithel’s best-known crafted material tradition.
It is not one universal recipe or one color of glass. The name covers a family of high-precision glasses, optical treatments, mirror work, signal components, and magical calibrations associated with the Saltglass Principalities, the Saltglass Lenswright Collegia, Whiteglass Harbor, Pearlglass Harbor, and the lighthouse supply system.
Whiteglass is the cultural and technical center. Pearlglass is the League’s commercial pressure point. The two harbors overlap without being interchangeable.
Whiteglass is where a lens is ground, argued over, repaired, calibrated, and made part of a visibility contract.
Pearlglass is where a certified lens, mirror, pearl-inlaid instrument, or sealed high-value optical cargo is appraised, insured, stored, and moved.
Public grades of Saltglass
Saltglass workshops distinguish products by purpose.

The grade describes intended work. It does not guarantee magical power.
An ordinary signal pane can be excellent nonmagical craft. A witness-grade plate is useful only when prepared, installed, and calibrated within a compatible system. Ward-grade Saltglass is not a normal market good.
Public inputs
The exact workshop recipes remain protected craft knowledge.
Publicly understood inputs include:
- clean glassmaking feedstock;
- reliable furnace fuel;
- mineral and salt additives;
- water suitable for controlled cooling and cleaning;
- abrasives for grinding and polish;
- silvering and mirror materials;
- metal frames and adjustment screws;
- pearl, shell, wax, cloth, and packing material;
- and access to controlled magical calibration where the finished work requires it.
The most valuable input is skilled labor.
A poor batch can be discarded. A poorly trained lenswright can send a flawed lens into a tower that will fail only when the weather becomes dangerous.
Production sequence
A formal Saltglass commission normally proceeds through the following stages.
1. Contract and purpose
The buyer states the intended function.
A harbor signal pane, a spyglass, a court mirror, a lighthouse lens, a witness plate, and a ward-light component are not treated as the same commission.
The contract records:
- dimensions;
- intended installation;
- required color or clarity;
- expected weather exposure;
- ordinary or magical function;
- responsible workshop;
- inspection authority;
- replacement obligation;
- and limits on copying or resale.
2. Batch preparation
Glassworkers prepare and record the batch.
The workshop controls contamination, furnace condition, tools, water, additives, and working temperature. High-value commissions may use sealed measures and witnessed ingredient release.
3. Forming and annealing
The glass is formed, cooled, and rested according to its intended size and stress.
A lens blank can appear sound before hidden strain is discovered. Large lighthouse pieces require more controlled cooling than small panes or beads.
4. Grinding, cutting, and polishing
Lensworkers and mirror workers bring the piece to shape.
The process can take longer than casting. Small changes in curve, edge, thickness, polish, silvering, or alignment affect how the finished piece handles light.
5. Magical or operational treatment
Where the commission requires magic, route-pulse, witness work, sacred use, or signal response, the piece receives the applicable treatment.
This can involve:
- inscription;
- controlled exposure;
- spellwork;
- blessing;
- color matching;
- installation with other components;
- calibration against a recognized tower;
- or comparison with a master standard.
No one treatment makes every Saltglass piece suitable for every magical use.
6. Inspection
The piece is tested in the conditions it is expected to survive.
Tests can include:
- ordinary daylight;
- low light;
- fog;
- rain;
- heat from a lantern chamber;
- salt spray;
- mirror alignment;
- shutter timing;
- signal-color comparison;
- bell response;
- and controlled magical activation.
A defect that appears only under storm-color is still a defect.
7. Marking and certification
Accepted work receives the marks and papers appropriate to its use.
A major lighthouse piece may carry:
- workshop mark;
- lenswright mark;
- batch or commission number;
- intended tower;
- orientation mark;
- inspection date;
- installation instructions;
- limits on repair;
- and the authority that recognized it.
A certificate does not make bad glass good. It identifies who must answer when certified work fails.
Saltglass authority
Different bodies control different parts of the tradition.
The Saltglass Lenswright Collegia regulate training, workmanship, protected techniques, and professional standing. Whiteglass authorities handle contracts, optical disputes, and visibility politics. Pearlglass handles commercial certification, appraisal, sealed cargo, and insurance. Beacon Houses decide whether a component is accepted into their operational system. Lighthouse artificers install and maintain complex assemblies. Mirror courts hear disputes where reflection, contract, evidence, or controlled visibility become inseparable.
No one authority controls every piece of Saltglass.
That division protects the public from one monopoly and creates several smaller monopolies instead.
Failure states
Saltglass can fail through:
- bubbles or inclusions;
- hidden stress;
- uneven curve;
- flawed silvering;
- edge fracture;
- heat shock;
- salt damage;
- poor mounting;
- wrong orientation;
- copied or false marks;
- incompatible magical treatment;
- deliberate substitution;
- incorrect color;
- corrupted calibration;
- or a certificate issued under pressure.
Failure can produce distortion rather than darkness.
A lens may still shine while moving a reef edge, weakening a fog-cut, altering a sky-sign color, or sending a hidden cast that trained pilots read incorrectly.
Access and limits
Ordinary fine lenses and signal glass are specialist goods.
Saltglass that participates in a magical system is usually uncommon and requires a plausible connection to Whiteglass, Pearlglass, the Lenswright Collegia, a Beacon House, a lighthouse order, a recognized artificer, or another institution with actual access.
Ward-grade, hidden-cast, or restricted witness components are usually rare or campaign-controlled. They are not made available merely because a character has enough coin.
Saltglass never grants a generic mechanical bonus by material alone. Its PF2e effect comes from the specific item, structure, formula, spell, ritual, or hazard that uses it.
Beacon-Engine Components
A true Maritheli lighthouse is an assembled magical and mechanical system.
Saltglass is one part. Oil is another. The lantern chamber also depends on components whose value lies in exact interaction.
Spell-cut shutters
Spell-cut shutters shape, interrupt, and code the beam.
Their cut pattern determines which parts of the light pass, how quickly they open, how they divide colors, and how the public signal relates to the hidden cast.
A shutter can be made from metal, treated wood, layered composite, or another workshop-approved material. Its defining feature is not the substance alone but the exact cut, hinge, balance, timing, and magical compatibility.
A damaged shutter can turn a correct message into an incorrect one.
Odrial Signwake and other signal-code examiners compare shutter sequence, bell interval, mirror flash, weather distortion, and witness memory after a communication failure.
Color plates
Color plates create or stabilize recognized signal colors.
They must be matched to:
- the oil;
- the lens;
- the expected distance;
- the weather;
- the public code;
- and any hidden-cast function.
Color is law in some emergencies.
A plate that shifts red toward amber can change whether a ship interprets a signal as closure, caution, quarantine, or another local warning.
Sky-sign screens
Sky-sign screens help project short words or symbols into cloud, fog, rain, or spray.
They require suitable weather surface, correct oil, lens angle, screen preparation, and a trained keeper. A screen is not a portable signboard that anyone can point at the sky.
Its misuse can create false route orders over a wide area.
Silvered mirrors and mirror tools
Beacon mirrors redirect, reinforce, split, or compare light.
Whiteglass and Pearlglass produce and certify mirror tools used by lighthouse workers, courts, observers, and inspectors. Mirror alignment can be mechanically exact and politically contested.
A mirror can reveal a defect. It can also hide one if the inspector controls the angle.
Bell weights and route-pulse fittings
Bell systems give timing, alarm, identity, and route response.
A great beacon’s hidden cast can travel through bell metal as well as light, fog, water, mirror, and air. The metal, weight, registration, hanging, and surrounding structure all affect the result.
No single bell weight is magical in isolation. It becomes part of a working route system through manufacture, installation, registration, and calibration.
Storm vanes and chamber fittings
Storm vanes, vents, reservoirs, wick assemblies, screens, drainage, shutters, and chamber mounts keep the beacon operating under weather.
These components are often less glamorous than Saltglass and more likely to cause failure.
A perfect lens mounted in a warped frame is not a perfect lighthouse.
Public Beacon Functions
A true beacon-engine combines materials into a defined operational function.

A public effect can be understood without disclosing a hidden bearing or private code.
Imprinted Pilots and Material Interfaces
A pilot imprint is not stored in one amulet or lens.
It is developed through apprenticeship, repeated exposure, lens practice, tattoo-code study, bell recognition, and controlled time inside a lantern chamber. Material systems support that training:
- approved Saltglass practice lenses;
- registered bell tones and route-pulse fittings;
- shutter and color exercises;
- controlled mirror alignment;
- protected exposure logs;
- chain-specific signal records;
- and instruments issued for one tower or class of tower.
Possessing an instrument does not grant an imprint.
A pilot may recognize public signals without reading the hidden cast. A character imprinted to Gulfwatch may not understand Deepwatch. An instrument calibrated for Stormwatch may be misleading in reef water.
Imprint records
A formal training record can include:
- pilot identity;
- teacher;
- participating Beacon House;
- tower or chain;
- dates and duration of exposure;
- signs of partial response;
- health effects;
- approved instruments;
- bell and plate families studied;
- restrictions;
- and the authority willing to recognize the result.
A damaged record does not erase what a pilot can perceive. It can prevent another harbor from trusting the claim.
Failure
Material-related imprint failure includes:
- copied practice lens;
- incorrect bell registration;
- exposure to the wrong chain;
- misaligned chamber;
- substituted plate;
- contaminated oil;
- damaged mirror;
- false training record;
- or a pilot continuing after serious afterimages, headaches, disorientation, or involuntary route response.
The pilot may perceive a cast and interpret it incorrectly.
Whiteglass and Pearlglass
Whiteglass is the technical and cultural center of Saltglass craft.
Pearlglass is the League’s commercial counterpart.

A commission may begin in Whiteglass and become politically vulnerable in Pearlglass.
A technically perfect lens can be delayed by insurance, title, damaged packing, disputed ownership, or a court hold.
Installation
A lighthouse component is not finished when it leaves the workshop.
Installation requires:
- tower inspection;
- chamber cleaning;
- confirmation of frame, shutter, oil, wick, mirror, and ventilation;
- comparison with the commission record;
- orientation;
- ordinary-light test;
- weather test;
- operational or magical test;
- keeper acceptance;
- entry into the tower log.
A workshop may certify manufacture while refusing responsibility for a bad installation.
A Beacon House may accept installation while rejecting the workshop’s repair method.
Decommissioning
A lens, plate, mirror, or shutter removed from a tower remains sensitive material.
Decommissioning records:
- reason for removal;
- last operational state;
- known defect;
- whether witness records are present;
- whether hidden-cast information remains;
- intended storage, repair, destruction, or transfer;
- responsible witnesses;
- and whether the object may be sold.
A retired signal pane can still reveal a code.
A cracked witness plate can still be evidence.
A broken ward component can still be dangerous.
Public Contacts
Odrial Signwake
Odrial teaches signal code and reconstructs failed sequences. He can distinguish shutter error, timing error, plate mismatch, weather distortion, and operator mistake. He cannot prove sabotage from one irregular signal.
Halric Stormchain
Halric commands a Stormgate fort where mirrors, chains, pilot locks, and emergency shelter converge. He can stop passage when material failure makes the strait unsafe. He cannot make a broken signal reliable by military order.
Naezara Stillwake
Naezara records arrivals, wakes, reflections, and signals at a military quay. She is useful when a mirror, wake, or light says a vessel did something its papers deny.
Elaris Whitebell
Elaris uses logs, bells, witness burns, and material records in wrongful-death cases. She can force a technical record into public argument. She cannot make an uncertain trace certain.
Campaign Problems
- A replacement lens arrives with the correct mark and the wrong hidden stress.
- A Pearlglass insurer refuses release until a family ownership dispute is settled.
- A copied color plate turns quarantine amber into departure amber.
- A pilot’s practice lens contains another chain’s calibration.
- A retired shutter appears in a privateer yard.
- A sky-sign screen produces a message no keeper admits sending.
- A mirror inspection reveals the tower frame has shifted rather than the lens.
- Whiteglass certifies a repair that the Beacon House refuses to install.
