Seafloor, Deeps, Banks, Shoals, and Channels
A surface map of Marithel shows islands separated by water.
A working nautical chart shows the terrain between them.
Beneath the surface are banks, shoals, reef platforms, drowned high ground, channels, wreck fields, steep depth changes, harbor approaches, and deep basins. Some are broad enough to shape entire regional routes. Others matter only to one harbor entrance or one local passage.
These submerged features determine where vessels can travel, where anchors hold, where reefs develop, where currents concentrate, and why apparently nearby places can be difficult to reach from one another.
Maritheli sailors therefore read geography beneath the keel as carefully as geography above the horizon.
Depth Means Different Things to Different Vessels
Marithel does not use one universal set of named depth categories.
Sailors commonly describe water according to practical use: boat water, reef water, ship water, deep water, outside soundings, or whatever local expression best communicates the immediate problem. Meanings vary among harbors, professions, and regions.
What matters is whether the actual vessel can safely pass.
Draft matters.
So do load, size, maneuverability, tide, current, sea state, and the amount of room available if something goes wrong.
A local reef boat may cross water that excludes a heavily laden merchant vessel.
A large ship may dominate open water and still be unable to follow smaller craft into the Shard channels or Drowned Reef cuts.
A vessel can see its destination and remain physically unable to reach it.
Depth therefore creates access boundaries without requiring walls.
The Bottom as a Navigational Reference
Sounding the water gives a crew information that the surface may not reveal.
Depth is the most obvious result, but experienced crews can also use bottom material as a geographic clue. Sand, mud, shell, weed, loose coral, gravel, wreck debris, or hard stone can help confirm whether the ship is where the pilot expects it to be.
This becomes particularly useful when visual navigation fails.
In Veilward fog, a pilot may lose every island and lighthouse reference while still recognizing the expected sequence of depths and bottom types along a known approach.
Near a harbor, a change from mud to sand may confirm that the vessel has reached a known turn.
Within reef water, the wrong bottom can be as concerning as the wrong depth.
Soundings are therefore submerged landmarks.
They do not make navigation automatic. One sounding describes one point. A reef head, shoal edge, or steep change may lie nearby. Strong current can also distort a line.
Maritheli pilots combine bottom knowledge with tide, landmarks, markers, water color, current, and local experience.
Banks and Broad Submerged High Ground
Some areas of Marithel contain extensive submerged ground that rises well above the deeper water around it without necessarily breaking the surface.
Navigators commonly describe broad examples as banks.
A bank may support reef growth, fishing grounds, low islands, sand accumulation, or shoals. Even when safely submerged, it can alter swell and current enough to matter to ships crossing above it.
This is especially important because Marithel's shallow-water geography does not occur only around visible coastlines.
A vessel can be many miles from land and still be crossing structurally significant ground.
Crews may recognize such water through changes in swell, water color, fishing activity, breaking seas during heavy weather, or repeated shallower soundings.
Shoals and Named Hazards
A shoal is shallow enough to matter to navigation, but the term does not describe what the hazard is made from.
Rock, reef, sand, shell, wreckage, or mixtures of several materials behave differently.
That distinction matters.
A sand shoal may shift after major weather.
Hard rock is comparatively stable.
Living reef can grow and break.
Wreckage can turn an existing shallow area into a more complex obstruction.
Shipwreck Shoals is a public example of this last problem. Its identity is not merely “shallow water where ships once sank.” Repeated maritime loss has become part of the navigational character of the site.
A crew approaching such water must consider both the original bottom and what wrecks have added to it.
Wreck Fields Become Terrain
Wrecks do not always disappear from geography after the event that created them.
In shallow or constrained water, a wreck may remain long enough to alter how later vessels move.
It can trap sediment.
Marine growth can accumulate around it.
Other ships can strike it.
Debris can spread into an approach.
Additional wrecks can collect nearby.
The Ninefold Wreck Field in the Drowned Reefs demonstrates why some groups of wrecks deserve treatment as geographic features in their own right.
For navigation, the question eventually stops being which wreck came first.
The useful fact is that the bottom now contains a field of obstructions through which vessels must find safe water.
The legal, funerary, salvage, ancestral, and historical meanings of those wrecks belong to their own pages.
Their physical presence belongs here.
Submerged Ridges and Passages
Some underwater high ground extends in long formations rather than broad banks.
Where it approaches the surface, such ground may support islands, reefs, shoals, or isolated rocks. Where it remains deeper, sailors may know it only through soundings, swell, current behavior, or the way routes bend around it.
Breaks in higher submerged ground can create valuable passages.
The water may appear open from the surface, yet the useful depth follows a comparatively narrow line.
These passages behave like drowned passes.
A vessel that drifts sideways can leave the safe water quickly.
Strong crosscurrent becomes more serious because there is less room to recover.
The existence of such physical openings helps explain why local pilotage remains important even when the islands themselves are clearly visible.
Channels Are Physical; Routes Are Learned
A channel is usable water through surrounding conditions that are less suitable for the vessel attempting passage.
Those surrounding conditions may include reef, sand, rock, shallow bank, island shore, wreckage, or several hazards together.
A route is something more.
It adds knowledge:
- where the channel lies;
- how it is approached;
- when it is usable;
- what markers identify it;
- what conditions make it unsafe;
- where a traveler goes after leaving it.
This distinction is important throughout Marithel.
Stormgate Passage depends on the physical water of Stormgate Strait, but the route is more than the strait itself.
Reefcourt Approach crosses actual reef geography, but it is a recognized way through that geography rather than the reef system as a whole.
The Windrider Market Circuit depends upon navigable central waters and harbor approaches, but it is a travel network rather than a naturally occurring line in the sea.
Law and institutions can close or restrict a route.
They cannot make the underlying channel cease to exist.
Stormgate Passage
Stormgate Strait concentrates movement between larger northern and central water systems.
The physical passage usable by many larger vessels is more constrained than the surrounding expanse of water suggests.
That has two consequences.
Ships converge there.
Moving water also becomes more consequential there.
A vessel cannot always avoid the strongest part of a passage simply by steering farther away. The neighboring water may be shallower, more turbulent, or otherwise unsuitable for the ship.
This is the physical foundation beneath Stormgate Passage.
Its exact operational line can vary with vessel, tide, current, weather, and official navigation practice. The public geographic fact is that Stormgate provides a limited and consequential connection through which large amounts of maritime traffic must pass.
Characters approaching the Strait can see the consequences before entering it: anchored craft straining differently against their lines, buoys leaning in strong flow, small boats delaying passage, or larger ships collecting before a change in conditions.
Windrider Gulf and the Market Circuit
Windrider Gulf presents a different pattern.
The gulf contains enough broadly usable water and enough alternative harbors that movement does not depend on one narrow passage.
The Windrider Market Circuit connects established commercial nodes including Coinmast Harbor, Galeport Market Town, Windrider Freeport, Lawkeel Harbor, and Grainwake Harbor.
The physical route beneath that network is not one uniform-depth lane.
Large vessels generally favor dependable approaches.
Smaller local traffic can use additional passages and harbor connections unavailable or inconvenient to them.
This creates one of Windrider's defining advantages: travelers can know the principal regional network without knowing every local shortcut.
When one approach becomes temporarily unusable, some traffic can divert rather than abandoning the gulf entirely.
That geographic redundancy is part of why central Marithel supports repeated high-volume movement.
The Shard Isles
The Shard Isles compress many kinds of access into a comparatively fragmented archipelago.
Whiteglass Harbor, Pearlglass Harbor, Crownspur Hold, Blackedge, Splinterpoint, and Sapphire Reef all belong to a physical system in which land and navigable water repeatedly interrupt one another.
The result is a region where vessel choice matters greatly.
Small local craft can use passages that visiting ships may avoid.
A direct-looking line between islands may cross shallows.
A longer approach may be the only dependable one for a loaded vessel.
Some harbor routes also matter because they connect maritime arrival with elevated or inland settlements rather than ending at the waterfront.
A character watching local traffic can often infer submerged geography from behavior alone. If every larger vessel rounds one headland while fishing craft pass inside it, the difference probably lies beneath the surface.
Highfall Approaches
Highfall combines strong visible relief with equally important underwater approach conditions.
Tidewall Harbor provides a major arrival point beneath higher settlements and defensive positions such as Highfall Keep.
The region demonstrates that three questions must remain separate:
Can a vessel approach the coast?
Can it stop safely?
Can people and cargo actually reach useful land?
Deep water can lie close to a steep cliff without producing a harbor.
A beach can permit easy landing by small boats while remaining inaccessible to large ships.
A protected cove may be physically usable but disconnected from important inland routes.
Tidewall matters because maritime access and the landward movement network meet there effectively enough to support major traffic.
The Sea of Whispers
The Sea of Whispers contains broader navigable water than the dense channels of the Shard Isles or Drowned Reefs.
Aun'ai provides one of its principal island anchors, while Northward, Veilward, and Stormgate shape important approaches around it.
In open portions of the Sea, immediate grounding becomes a smaller concern.
The difficulty returns near arrival.
A voyage can therefore shift from harbor pilotage into broader open-water navigation and then back into shoals, islands, signals, soundings, and approach channels near the destination.
This transition is especially important when fog removes the expected visual landmarks.
Veilward and the Invisible Bottom
Veilward makes submerged knowledge unusually valuable because the visible landscape cannot always be relied upon.
Fog may conceal islands, lights, and coastal silhouettes.
The sea floor remains.
A sequence of soundings matching the expected route does not prove perfect position, but it provides useful confirmation.
Unexpected bottom conditions provide warning.
This produces a distinctly Veilward form of navigation in which the bottom can temporarily become more reliable than the horizon.
It also gives experienced crews a physical baseline against which more unusual navigational failures can be recognized.
Stormcrown Atoll and Northern Shallows
The presence of Stormcrown Atoll in the northern system is important because it prevents reef and shallow-platform geography from being treated as exclusively southern.
Northern waters combine colder conditions and exposed passages with atoll, bank, and harbor approaches that still require careful navigation.
The practical questions remain familiar:
Where does the shallow structure begin?
Where is the usable entrance?
Which vessels can enter?
How does tide or weather affect the approach?
How much protected water exists inside?
The answers differ from those in the Drowned Reefs, but the underlying geographic problem is recognizable.
The Drowned Reefs as Nested Geography
The Drowned Reefs are too large and internally varied to be treated as one reef.
They are a regional landscape containing physical features at several scales.
At the broadest scale are major reef complexes, banks, and shallow-water systems.
Within them are lagoon waters, reef margins, major channels, tidal flats, and deeper cuts.
Within those lie individual reef heads, rocks, shoals, wrecks, sand accumulations, and minor passages.
Low islands and cays can rise from portions of the same larger system.
This hierarchy matters for geographic parentage.
Bonefield Reef is one named reef feature inside the greater Drowned Reefs.
Ninefold Wreck Field is another discrete physical site.
Cape Spearpoint is a separate regional landmark.
Reefcourt Platform is a human-built site seated within the region rather than the physical center of the reef system.
These entities belong to the Drowned Reefs without being interchangeable with it.
Reefcourt Approach
Reefcourt Approach is a publicly recognized path toward Reefcourt through complicated reef water.
It is not the only physical route that exists.
Its importance comes from being a known approach usable by travelers who do not possess every local or restricted passage.
The route can be affected by physical change.
Storm debris can narrow a turn.
Sand can accumulate.
A wreck can obstruct part of the passage.
Living reef can alter a margin gradually.
Tidal conditions can make the same route more or less suitable for different vessels.
The first question remains geographic:
Can this vessel still get through?
The later questions of permission, pilots, markers, law, and responsibility belong elsewhere.
Bonefield Reef
Bonefield Reef demonstrates why an individual reef can matter at regional scale.
A named reef affects nearby navigation because sailors expect it to occupy a known part of the wider reef landscape.
Ordinary traffic gives it room.
Local boats may work much closer to it.
A ship unexpectedly finding itself near Bonefield has made a meaningful navigational error before any legal, supernatural, or encounter consequence begins.
Its eventual dedicated page can establish its exact internal structure if required.
At this level, its role is to show that the Drowned Reefs are composed of individually meaningful geographic features rather than undifferentiated coral.
Siren's Deep
Siren's Deep marks one of Marithel's strongest transitions away from ordinary bottom-reference navigation.
Its publicly known margins are more important to most sailors than detailed knowledge of its interior.
As vessels move toward the Deep, several familiar tools become less dependable:
ordinary soundings cease to provide continuing reassurance;
anchorable bottom becomes less available;
reef and bank references diminish;
refuge becomes harder to reach.
The Sirenward Exclusion Buoy Line provides a player-facing warning boundary associated with this change.
It should not be interpreted as a precise bathymetric contour. It is a navigational and safety marker associated with waters that become increasingly difficult and dangerous beyond the commonly traveled margins.
The detailed internal depths of Siren's Deep are not established as ordinary public knowledge.
This page does not invent them.
The Western Deep-Water Transition
The Tidebound Corsair Isles occupy waters where island shelter and exposed western ocean conditions exist relatively close together.
This creates useful but demanding geography.
A vessel can leave a protected anchorage and enter increasingly exposed water quickly.
The Corsair Run crosses this broader western route environment, but its exact local navigation should not be inferred from the name alone.
The player-facing physical fact is that Tidebound waters combine island cover, hidden or protected anchorages, and rapid access toward deeper exposed sea.
That is enough to explain why local route knowledge matters without publishing every usable passage.
Southpoint and the Southern Approach
The Southpoint Isles provide the last dense set of major Maritheli staging islands before many southern journeys enter longer open-water commitments.
The transition toward the Southern Approach is gradual.
Near Southpoint, ships still work among islands, harbor approaches, shallows, and known refuge.
Farther outward, the spacing between useful shelter increases.
The significance of bottom geography consequently changes.
Near islands, draft and channel access remain immediate concerns.
Farther away, navigation, weather, supply, rescue distance, and the ability to remain at sea become more important.
The region does not require one arbitrary underwater boundary to be geographically meaningful.
Travelers experience the transition through the increasing cost of turning back or diverting.
Cape Spearpoint and Regional Orientation
Named coastal landmarks remain important even on a page concerned primarily with underwater terrain.
Cape Spearpoint provides a Drowned Reefs orientation reference because submerged geography is often navigated in relationship to visible features.
A reef cut, bank edge, or safe approach becomes easier to communicate when it can be described relative to a cape, lighthouse, island, or other stable landmark.
This is one reason charts combine what is visible above the surface with what is known below it.
Neither layer is sufficient on its own.
Anchorages Depend on More Than Shelter
A protected cove is not automatically a useful anchorage.
A vessel needs appropriate depth and bottom capable of holding its anchor.
Sand, firm mud, loose material, weed, hard rock, reef, and steep slopes behave differently.
This means two neighboring coves can provide very different security even under the same wind.
Maritheli pilots and captains therefore learn holding ground as part of approach knowledge.
If an anchor drags repeatedly in a place known for dependable holding, the crew has learned something important.
The vessel may be misplaced.
The bottom may have changed.
The current or weather may be stronger than it appears.
Geography continues providing evidence even after the ship stops moving.
Grounding as a Geographic Event
Grounding depends on what the vessel strikes and under what conditions.
A slow grounding on sand differs greatly from being driven onto hard reef.
The physical consequences can include:
- immobilization;
- hull or steering damage;
- leaking;
- cargo shift;
- greater exposure as the tide falls;
- repeated impact in surf;
- blockage of a narrow passage.
That final consequence is particularly important in Marithel.
A grounded or wrecked vessel in a constrained channel can become a regional navigation problem rather than merely a private accident.
Detailed Pathfinder Second Edition damage, repair, and vessel procedures belong to the adopted maritime rules.
The geographic fact is that a ship can become part of the terrain other ships must now avoid.
Harbor Approaches Can Be Maintained Geography
Some important approaches require continuing human work.
Sediment accumulates.
Storm debris must be cleared.
Wreckage obstructs channels.
Markers need to be surveyed and restored.
Some passages may require dredging or other clearing to preserve useful depth.
This means a harbor's effective geography can degrade without its docks being damaged at all.
The signs are visible to travelers:
survey boats working after storms;
larger ships waiting offshore;
temporary markers;
cargo transferred into smaller craft;
traffic diverted toward another harbor.
The institutions, labor, financing, and law behind that work belong to later sections.
This page establishes the physical dependency they exist to manage.
Markers Translate Hidden Terrain
Much of Marithel's submerged geography cannot be seen clearly from a deck.
Buoys, lights, poles, paired landmarks, bells, cairns, painted rocks, and lighthouse bearings translate hidden terrain into usable information.
A marker may indicate:
the safe side of a shoal;
the turn into a channel;
the position of a wreck;
the entrance through a reef;
the alignment needed to remain over dependable depth.
The physical hazard remains if the marker disappears.
What is lost is the information allowing an unfamiliar crew to avoid it.
This is why a missing marker can matter more immediately than gradual physical change.
The sea has not necessarily changed.
The crew's ability to read it has.
Public Routes and Unpublished Water
Marithel contains more usable water than appears on ordinary public charts.
Local communities know passages relevant only to their own craft.
Reef wardens know channels unnecessary for merchant traffic.
Harbor pilots possess detailed approach knowledge.
Corsairs, smugglers, and Farwake navigators may deliberately restrict what they share.
The Farwake Vanishing Routes are known publicly as a category of difficult and unusual route knowledge, but their operational geometry is not public geography and is not exposed here.
This distinction is important for players:
an unmarked passage is not automatically magical;
a mapped passage is not automatically the only usable one;
a secret route can still depend upon ordinary physical water.
Charts are records of selected knowledge, not complete copies of the sea.
Diving Adds a Vertical Route
Surface coordinates are not enough to locate an underwater destination fully.
Depth is also part of the approach.
A wreck or submerged structure directly below a ship can be more difficult to reach than an island several miles away.
The route now runs vertically as well as horizontally.
Greater depth affects light, communication, rescue, travel time, and the consequences of failure.
Marithel's diving practices and equipment exist because valuable or important places lie beneath water not easily reached by ordinary swimming.

The geographic principle is that underwater places have approaches just as islands do.
Different People Read the Same Bottom Differently
No profession possesses one complete interpretation of Marithel's submerged geography.
A merchant navigator cares about dependable approaches.
A fisher cares about banks and feeding water.
A reef warden cares about cuts, tidal behavior, and local shallows.
A salvager cares about wreck depth and recovery routes.
A harbor pilot knows how one port behaves under different conditions.
A lighthouse keeper understands how visible bearings relate to invisible hazards.
A naval captain cares about where one vessel can maneuver and another can escape.
A diver may know a section of sea floor directly that everyone above understands only through soundings and charts.
This distributed knowledge is one reason Marithel cannot be mastered simply by purchasing a good map.
What Travelers Can Observe
Submerged geography often reveals itself through the behavior of other people.
In Windrider Gulf, large ships may follow a broad curved approach while local boats cut directly across shallower water.
In the Shard Isles, small craft may disappear through gaps that visiting vessels consistently avoid.
At Stormgate, ships may wait before entering water that looks harmless from a distance.
In Veilward, sounding begins when the horizon disappears.
In the Drowned Reefs, local traffic follows winding lines through apparently open sea.
Around Shipwreck Shoals, vessels give an empty-looking patch of water a wide berth.
Near Bonefield Reef, reef boats work much closer to the hazard than ordinary traffic.
At Siren's Deep, the loss of dependable soundings marks a meaningful transition.
At Southpoint, captains preparing for the Southern Approach become increasingly concerned with whether the ship can remain at sea rather than whether the next local cut is passable.
These are not decorative details.
They are information characters can use.
Normal Change
Marithel's submerged geography is not perfectly static.
Sand moves.
Storms redistribute debris.
Reefs grow and break.
Channels silt.
Wrecks appear.
Harbor approaches require maintenance.
A changed sounding therefore has ordinary possible explanations.
Experienced crews check those explanations first.
Was there a recent storm?
Is the chart old?
Did current push the ship away from the intended line?
Has a wreck been reported?
Is the assumed tide wrong?
Is the sounding itself unreliable?
Normal change is part of maritime life.
When the Bottom Stops Making Sense
Strange geography matters only because ordinary change has limits.
A sand bar moving after a storm is credible.
A known deep passage repeatedly returning shallow hard stone immediately after another large ship used it is not.
A reef changing gradually is normal.
A reef appearing over established deep water without a physical event sufficient to explain it deserves investigation.
One anomalous sounding can be error.
Several independent contradictions become evidence.
The page does not tell players what such evidence means.
It establishes why experienced sailors recognize that something is wrong.
Marithel Below the Waterline
Marithel does not end at its shores.
Banks support reefs and islands.
Shoals exclude vessels.
Channels create access.
Wreck fields become hazards.
Depth changes the usefulness of soundings and anchorage.
Harbor approaches determine which settlements can receive major traffic.
The same water can therefore be different geography to different people.
To a merchant vessel, it is too shallow.
To a reef boat, it is a passage.
To a warship, it is a barrier.
To a fisher, it is productive ground.
To a salvager, it is a wreck field.
To a pilot, it is a sequence of bottom, marker, current, tide, and turn.
The surface map shows where Marithel rises above the sea.
The navigational map shows where the continent continues beneath it.
