Terrain, Climate, Ice, and Natural Features

Veyrskold is not one frozen landscape. It is a northern continent divided by the places where ships can enter, trees can grow, heat reaches the surface, rivers can be crossed, mountains permit passage, and maintained shelter ends.

Its western shore is broken by fjords and sounds exposed to the northern Ocean of Storms. The Stonehold highlands rise behind that coast and divide water flowing west from water flowing south and east. Thornwake Taiga occupies the broad forest country below those heights. The Greenglen Thawlands lie within valleys warmed from beneath, where open water and cultivable ground survive longer than they do elsewhere. Redgate March controls the high eastern corridors. Moonwell Basin lies below those corridors in enclosed lake and well country. Blackmere Low receives the basin’s southern drainage and spreads it through marsh, peat, channels, and dark water. North of the inhabited belt, Whiteback Expanse opens into tundra, glacier, ruin fields, and the restricted roads of the Sealed North.

Veyrskold’s people do not speak of terrain as scenery. A mountain decides where a court can be reached. A spring decides whether lake ice can carry a sled. A storm decides whether a harbor is a refuge or a trap. A geothermal channel decides which storehouse remains warm after first frost. A missing road pole can close a route used for generations.

For that reason, this page describes each major terrain system through position, approach, work, authority, warnings, failure, and retreat.

The Shape of the Continent

Veyrskold rises in three broad steps.

The first step is the western and southern inhabited margin: Stormrim’s coast, Thornwake’s forest valleys, Greenglen’s warm hollows, Moonwell’s basin floor, and Blackmere’s low ground. Most permanent settlements stand within this step because it provides water, timber, food, harbors, fields, fisheries, peat, and roads that can be maintained through more than one season.

The second step is the Stonehold and Redgate highland belt. These mountains and passes separate the western coast from the northern interior and southeastern basin country. They contain hold-valleys, quarries, mines, giant roads, dragon-associated heights, fortified gates, and the principal crossings between regional watersheds.

The third step is the Whiteback interior. Forest gives way to open tundra, moraine, snowfield, and glacier. Fixed roads become surveyed alignments. Permanent settlements become fewer. Guide stations, mobile camps, rescue shelters, and seasonal work sites replace the continuous settlement network found farther south.

This structure is easiest to understand as a set of connected elevations.

No traveler crosses these levels without changing pace, equipment, or authority. A cart from Stormrim may reach a Stonehold valley, but it does not continue unchanged onto a glacier. A Blackmere boat may carry passengers toward Moonwell, but it cannot climb the basin road. A Greenglen wagon may carry food toward Redgate, but a pass closure can leave it waiting below the gate for days.

Watersheds and the Direction of Water

The Stonehold Crown forms Veyrskold’s principal watershed divide.

Water falling west of the main high ridges descends toward Stormrim Sound through steep river valleys. Water falling south of the ridges enters Thornwake and Greenglen. Water descending east and southeast enters Redgate valleys, Moonwell Basin, and Blackmere Low. Water and ice north of the highlands feed Whiteback’s glacier channels, tundra streams, and buried drainage.

These systems meet at transition zones, but they do not behave alike.

Stormrim Waters

Stormrim rivers are short, steep, and fast. They descend from Stonehold and Thornwake into fjords, bays, and sheltered coastal inlets.

Their lower reaches support:

  • harbor settlements;
  • mills;
  • fish runs;
  • freshwater collection;
  • timber handling;
  • ice cutting;
  • ferry crossings.

Their upper reaches are commonly broken by falls, rapids, narrow gorges, and winter ice.

A Stormrim river may carry timber during high thaw and become impassable during break-thaw when ice and flood debris strike bridges and harbor works. River-mouth settlements therefore place their principal stores above the flood line and maintain separate stairs or ramps for low-water and high-water landing.

Thornwake and Greenglen Waters

Thornwake’s rivers follow forest valleys toward Stormrim, Greenglen, Moonwell, or Blackmere depending on the local divide.

Greenglen tributaries remain open longer because of buried heat. Where warm water enters a colder forest river, the confluence is treated as a permanent thin-ice hazard. Crossing markers stand upstream or downstream rather than directly at the meeting point.

These rivers carry:

  • timber;
  • food;
  • seed stock;
  • medicinal plants;
  • passengers;
  • mill power;
  • spring flood.

They also carry warning. A sudden rise in warm water may indicate a vent shift, collapsed geothermal channel, damaged field works, or failure at a higher valley.

Moonwell Waters

Moonwell Basin collects water from Redgate’s descending valleys, Greenglen’s eastern slopes, and the enclosing basin rim.

The basin contains lakes, deep wells, springs, managed channels, and underground flow. Its water does not leave through one great river. Several southern outlets descend toward Blackmere.

Moonwell settlements protect these outlets because contamination or obstruction within the basin reaches downstream communities. A closure at a protected well is recorded at Moonwell Hall and carried south along the outlet roads before ordinary market traffic resumes.

Blackmere Waters

Blackmere receives water from Moonwell, wet Thornwake forest, local springs, peat drainage, and seasonal flood.

The water slows when it reaches the lowlands. It spreads into:

  • reed marsh;
  • shallow lake;
  • dark channel;
  • peat pool;
  • flooded forest;
  • seasonal meadow;
  • southeastern coastal water.

A flood can remain in Blackmere after the upstream river that caused it has fallen. For that reason, Blackmere crossing notices are issued locally. A clear Moonwell road does not prove that the lower causeway or ferry is usable.

Weather Paths

Veyrskold weather follows recognizable routes. Local people do not treat every storm as equally unpredictable.

Ocean of Storms Fronts

Weather from the northern Ocean of Storms reaches the outer Stormrim islands first.

The ordinary sequence is:

  1. Outer pilots observe pressure, swell, cloud, and distant visibility.
  2. Island stations send the first coastal warning.
  3. Stormrim’s outer harbor approaches restrict or suspend entry.
  4. Wind and precipitation reach the western headlands.
  5. Fjord conditions worsen according to the direction of each inlet.
  6. The weather rises against Stonehold’s western slopes.
  7. Snow or rain spills into lower Thornwake valleys.

A storm can close the open coast while leaving an inner fjord navigable. It can also do the reverse: an outer route may remain passable while wind forced through a particular fjord prevents safe docking.

Stormrim pilots therefore announce harbor conditions by approach, not by one continent-wide declaration.

Stonehold Uplift

When maritime air reaches the Stonehold Mountains, it rises, cools, and deposits heavy snow or rain on the western slopes.

The western passes receive greater accumulation than nearby protected valleys. High ridges may vanish in cloud while the hold below remains clear.

This weather creates three recurring problems:

  • avalanche loading above roads;
  • hidden rockfall after freeze and thaw;
  • false confidence among travelers who judge the pass from conditions in the valley.

Stonehold roadkeepers post the pass condition at the last inhabited shelter below the ascent. A traveler who ignores a closure does not gain a right to rescue ahead of those already on the road.

Whiteback Descent Winds

Cold air drains south from Whiteback across tundra and through mountain openings.

These winds are strongest where glacier surface, plateau, and pass align. They can reach Redgate corridors, northern Greenglen valleys, and the upper Thornwake tree line.

The first signs are:

  • rapid clearing of low cloud;
  • hardening snow;
  • a sudden fall in visible steam over warm ground;
  • animals turning away from exposed routes;
  • wind beginning above the traveler before reaching ground level.

When a descent wind is expected, Whiteback stations shorten travel stages and Stonehold shelters keep doors on the lee side unblocked.

Greenglen Steam Weather

Cold air passing over open geothermal water creates steam fog.

This fog settles into the warm valleys, obscures roads, coats nearby surfaces, and freezes against structures farther from the heat source.

Greenglen does not close all roads when steam fog forms. Inspection posts close the specific channel, terrace, or hollow where visibility and ground temperature become unsafe. Raised roads remain open when their edge markers can still be seen from one to the next.

Moonwell Cold Pooling

During still weather, cold air descends from Moonwell’s rim and settles across the basin floor.

The lower lakes and roads may become colder than the slopes above them. Fog persists around wells and water while the rim remains clear.

Moonwell travelers therefore receive basin-floor and rim reports separately. A clear view from Redgate does not mean that the final descent or lake crossing is open.

Blackmere Fog and Freeze

Blackmere fog follows water rather than road.

It forms along channels, peat pools, open springs, warm inflow, and the edges of newly frozen marsh. It can cover a winter road while leaving nearby raised ground clear.

Blackmere routekeepers use poles, reed cuts, bells, and elevated lamps because distant natural landmarks are unreliable from the marsh floor.

Seasonal Conversion

Veyrskold does not have one route map. Each season converts water, ground, ice, and settlement access.

Deep Winter

Deep winter opens the greatest number of sled routes.

Frozen rivers, marshes, lakes, and sheltered coastal margins become transport surfaces. Blackmere gains direct crossings that do not exist during thaw. Moonwell shore journeys shorten across inspected lake ice. Thornwake timber can move over snow roads. Whiteback travel becomes more predictable where the survey remains current.

Deep winter also closes:

  • exposed mountain passes;
  • unprotected cliff roads;
  • minor harbors;
  • high settlements without fuel;
  • routes whose shelter chain has failed.

A winter route is not declared open because the water appears frozen. The responsible station tests the surface, sets markers, records the date, and announces the load limit.

Late Winter

Late winter is the season of tired structures and depleted stores.

Ice roads remain useful, but pressure ridges rise. Roofs carry months of snow. Animals require more feed. Fuel caches must be checked before caravans are permitted into remote stages.

A late-winter route report records:

  • ice thickness or condition;
  • visible pressure damage;
  • shelter fuel;
  • snow depth;
  • bridge loading;
  • animal availability;
  • the most recent completed passage.

A route without a recent completed passage is downgraded until inspected.

Break-Thaw

Break-thaw closes winter routes before restoring summer roads.

Blackmere loses direct marsh crossings. Moonwell lake ice breaks away from shore. Thornwake rivers carry moving ice. Greenglen roads sink where warm ground softens first. Stormrim cliff paths glaze during night refreeze. Whiteback glacier margins become unstable.

Communities do not describe break-thaw as an easier travel season merely because the air is warmer. It is the season in which people are most often stranded between transport systems.

High Thaw

High thaw opens harbors, ferries, forest roads, mountain work, farming, and river transport.

Stormrim receives foreign ships. Thornwake timber and medicines move toward markets. Greenglen plants, harvests, repairs channels, and sends food outward. Stonehold repairs high roads and quarry access. Redgate opens passes after inspection. Moonwell receives travelers by road and boat. Blackmere shifts from winter tracks to ferries and marked channels.

Whiteback high-thaw work focuses on:

  • route resurvey;
  • shelter repair;
  • exposed ruin inspection;
  • tundra movement;
  • preparation for the next freeze.

Freeze-Up

Freeze-up begins when boats can no longer pass safely but ice cannot carry ordinary traffic.

The last reliable boat and the first reliable sled rarely occur on the same day.

During freeze-up:

  • Blackmere settlements depend on stored food and local craft;
  • island communities wait for either cleared channel or tested ice;
  • Moonwell shore traffic returns to longer land roads;
  • Stormrim harbors use ice boats, small pilot craft, or waiting anchorages;
  • Greenglen bridges and raised roads receive heavier traffic because waterways close.

Freeze-up shelters carry larger emergency stores because travelers may arrive after both planned routes fail.

Travel Stage Standards

Veyrskold measures difficult journeys by safe stages rather than straight distance.

A stage assumes eight to ten hours available for movement, inspection, rest, and necessary transfer under ordinary conditions. It does not mean eight to ten hours of uninterrupted travel.

These times assume:

  • ordinary weather;
  • a maintained route;
  • appropriate equipment;
  • a competent local guide where required;
  • no combat or emergency;
  • a party able to maintain the route’s expected pace.

A party carrying an injured traveler, supporting limited mobility, moving heavy cargo, or traveling with inexperienced animals plans shorter stages and confirms assisted passage before leaving the last inhabited stop.

A closed stage has no extended travel estimate. It is unavailable.

Stormrim Sound and the Stormrim Coast

Stormrim Sound is Veyrskold’s western maritime region. The Stormrim Coast is the mainland and island edge organized around its fjords, harbors, signal stations, fishing waters, and inland roads.

The coast faces the northern Ocean of Storms. Stonehold rises inland to the east and northeast. Thornwake’s forested river valleys meet the coast to the south and southeast.

Stormrim Haven is the principal foreign-facing gateway. Icebell Quay handles seasonal ice traffic and transfers. Far-Treaty Harbor receives traffic connected to northern agreements and controlled foreign contact. Drowned Lantern Anchorage serves as a recognized refuge or waiting place when an intended approach cannot be used.

What the Coast Looks Like

The coast alternates between:

  • cliff;
  • fjord mouth;
  • rock shelf;
  • protected cove;
  • island channel;
  • river mouth;
  • gravel landing;
  • reef;
  • narrow harbor valley.

There is no continuous road at water level. Roads climb above cliffs, descend at harbor valleys, or pass inland around impassable headlands.

Arrival at Stormrim Haven

A foreign vessel reaches Stormrim Haven through a controlled sequence.

  1. The vessel enters the outer sighting water and raises its identity signal.
  2. The outer station answers with the current harbor condition.
  3. If pilotage is required, the vessel holds below the designated cliff or island mark.
  4. A Stormrim pilot boards or leads from a local craft.
  5. The vessel passes the outer reef and ice line.
  6. Harbor officials assign a quay, anchorage, winter berth, or waiting position.
  7. Passengers enter through the public landing and guest-law office.
  8. Cargo moves to the harbor yard for transfer to cart, sled, pack train, or local boat.

A vessel receiving no answer does not infer permission. It proceeds to Drowned Lantern Anchorage or remains outside the inner hazard line.

Signals

Stormrim uses lights, flags, boards, bells, smoke, and pilot craft according to weather and visibility.

A signal is complete only when the expected answer is received. A bell heard once in fog does not prove the route is open. Harbor notices identify the sequence expected from the next station.

When one signal station fails, the adjoining station announces the gap and the affected approach becomes pilot-only.

Coastal Work

Stormrim’s terrain supports:

  • fishing;
  • pilotage;
  • salvage;
  • ship repair;
  • salt and oil storage;
  • cliff quarrying;
  • coastal timber transfer;
  • sea rescue;
  • ice cutting;
  • foreign trade.

These activities share limited harbor space. Stormrim Haven assigns separate areas for damaged vessels, fishing landings, passenger arrival, dangerous salvage, and winter ice work.

Freezing-Spray Corridor

The most dangerous freezing spray occurs along exposed headlands, outer quays, and vessels waiting outside sheltered water.

Warning signs are:

  • spray freezing before it drains;
  • lines and rails thickening visibly;
  • a vessel listing as ice accumulates;
  • harbor stairs losing their cut edges;
  • signal mechanisms moving slowly.

When the freezing-spray warning is raised, outer loading stops. Ships already inside move to protected berths. Ships outside are directed to the nearest refuge rather than kept waiting at the pilot mark.

Silverwake Sound and the Northern Island Waters

Silverwake Sound belongs to the northern maritime system associated with Stormrim Sound, the Black Ice Coast, and the island routes leading toward the Seal-Singer Isles.

Its exact boundary must be fixed on the final continent map, but its function is clear: it is the transition between Stormrim’s principal settled harbor network and colder, less sheltered northern water.

The sound has:

  • broader channels than the inner fjords;
  • more drifting ice;
  • fewer continuous coastal roads;
  • lower and more widely separated islands;
  • longer gaps between refuge anchorages;
  • greater dependence on local route knowledge.

The Island Song Routes pass through these waters. Their full navigation method is not reproduced on public charts, but public maps show the recognized harbors, warning waters, and places where a foreign vessel must take a local pilot.

Route Failure

If an island signal does not answer:

  1. The leading vessel slows or stops at the last confirmed mark.
  2. Following vessels remain outside the channel.
  3. A local craft checks the signal station if conditions permit.
  4. If the station cannot be reached, the branch closes.
  5. Traffic returns to the last refuge or waits under the nearest inhabited island.

No captain is authorized to replace a missing island signal with memory alone during fog or moving ice.

Iceflow Bay

Iceflow Bay is a named western maritime feature associated with Veyrskold’s cold harbor network.

Its final placement relative to Stormrim Haven, Icebell Quay, and Silverwake Sound must be locked on the continent map. It should not be assigned an exact position until that relationship is confirmed.

The bay’s accepted role is that of a sheltered cold-water indentation used differently by season.

During high thaw it supports vessels, fisheries, and transfer traffic. During stable winter the inner bay can support inspected ice approaches. During freeze-up it is vulnerable to slush, drifting sheets, and pressure against shore.

Infrastructure must stand above the pressure line. A building placed directly against the ordinary summer shore would be damaged when winter ice piles inland.

Stonehold Crown and the Stonehold Mountains

Stonehold Crown contains Veyrskold’s principal inhabited highlands. The Stonehold Mountains are the mountain system within that region.

Stormrim lies to the west. Thornwake and Greenglen lie below the southern slopes. Whiteback begins beyond the northern heights. Redgate controls the principal eastern passage country.

Stonehold Hearth is the major highland settlement. Ironvale serves the region’s metalworking and extraction network. Stormhold Court occupies an authority site within the broader Stonehold geography.

Hold-Valleys

Permanent settlement occupies valleys where people can obtain:

  • running water;
  • shelter from the strongest wind;
  • road access;
  • pasture;
  • timber or peat;
  • stone;
  • storage;
  • defensible approaches.

A hold-valley is not merely a low place between peaks. It includes its road, water source, upper pasture, winter shelter, quarry or mine access, and the pass that connects it to the next valley.

The Shattered Spine

The Shattered Spine is the broken high-ridge system associated with the Stonehold Mountains.

Its exact alignment remains to be fixed by the final map. It must not be drawn as a straight wall. Glacier, deep valley, fallen giant works, and separated massifs interrupt it.

From Stormrim, the Spine appears as uneven dark and white heights behind the coast. From southern Thornwake and Greenglen roads, only selected ridges are visible because lower mountains block the rest.

Dragonspine Highlands

The Dragonspine Highlands occupy the exposed upper country associated with Stonehold, Redgate, and the southern Whiteback approaches.

They contain:

  • high saddles;
  • wind-scoured plateaus;
  • permanent snow pockets;
  • dragon travel corridors;
  • watch sites;
  • old territorial marks;
  • limited shelters.

A traveler enters the Dragonspine country after leaving the last continuously inhabited hold-valley. The road becomes narrower, shelter spacing increases, and the route authority posts current notices concerning weather, dragon claims, and pass condition.

Not every Dragonspine route is closed by a dragon’s presence. A closure requires a recognized territorial notice, direct observation, damage, or instruction from an authority responsible for the road.

Ordinary Stonehold Ascent

A caravan traveling from Stormrim toward Stonehold follows this sequence:

  1. Cargo leaves the harbor yard on a maintained inland road.
  2. The road follows a river valley through lower forest.
  3. At the last coastal station, Stormrim notices are replaced by Stonehold road notices.
  4. Heavy cargo is divided before the steep ascent.
  5. The caravan reaches the first masonry shelter below the high road.
  6. Animals are inspected and changed if necessary.
  7. The road climbs by switchback, giant-laid surface, bridge, or cut ledge.
  8. The caravan enters the first inhabited hold-valley.

A normal journey requires multiple road stages. Exact settlement-to-settlement duration belongs in the route registry and must not be inferred from the fact that both settlements are shown on one regional map.

Avalanche Procedure

Stonehold avalanche roads use:

  • closure boards;
  • watch bells;
  • marked no-stop sections;
  • waiting shelters outside the fall line;
  • alternate lower roads where available.

When the warning is raised, travelers do not wait beneath the slope. They remain at the lower shelter or retreat to the previous hold.

If the bell line fails, the route closes until a watcher reaches the upper station or observes the slope from a safe position.

Giantfall Ruins

Giantfall Ruins is the public name for distributed giant-built and giant-associated remains in Stonehold and the southern Whiteback approaches.

The ruins include:

  • fallen halls;
  • broken bridges;
  • abandoned quarries;
  • road foundations;
  • towers;
  • graves;
  • treaty stones;
  • collapsed gateworks.

They do not form one bounded ruin region. Each ruin belongs to the region and local terrain containing it.

The Seven Silent Judges, the Court Beneath the Stone, the Hall of Unspent Winters, and other major sites must be placed individually. Their relationship to roads, holds, slopes, water, and neighboring ruins cannot be represented by the label “Giantfall Ruins” alone.

Use and Restriction

A giant road may remain in public use while the hall beside it is closed. A quarry may be abandoned for extraction but retained as a treaty site. A broken bridge may be repaired by mortals while remaining giant-sworn.

Before entering or removing material from a giant site, travelers determine whether it is:

  • giant-kind;
  • giant-sworn;
  • giant-ruined;
  • under mortal maintenance;
  • under a court restriction;
  • under a dragon claim;
  • part of a seal.

Visible abandonment does not establish ownerless status.

Whiteback Expanse

Whiteback Expanse occupies Veyrskold’s broad northern interior.

Its southern approaches meet Stonehold Crown, Thornwake Taiga, Greenglen Thawlands, and Redgate March. Its far northern roads narrow into the restricted geography of the Sealed North.

Whiteback includes tundra, moraine, exposed stone, snowfield, glacier, buried valley, ruin field, mobile camp, fixed station, and planar-absence landscape.

Greymill Underfall, Hollowford, and Brightmere are established Veyrskold settlements whose precise relationship to the Whiteback route network must be confirmed on the settlement-placement page. They must not be used as glacier-route anchors until their regional parentage and road connections are locked.

The White Tundra

The White Tundra is the open northern landscape between the continuous forest belt and the deeper glacier country.

It contains:

  • grass;
  • moss;
  • lichen;
  • low scrub;
  • exposed stone;
  • shallow thaw wetlands;
  • snow;
  • herd routes;
  • cairn lines;
  • seasonal camps.

Travelers enter it when tree cover becomes discontinuous and the road stops relying on forest shelter.

In winter, movement follows packed snow, herd routes, and marked sled lines. In high thaw, travelers use moraine, gravel ridges, and raised ground because the surface layer becomes wet over frozen soil.

Glacierwaste

Glacierwaste is the interior ice country where moving glacier becomes the dominant surface.

The name describes a terrain condition rather than a separately governed region. Its final extent must be placed on the map after the major glacier systems are resolved.

A glacier road is not a permanent road. It is the current safe alignment between surveyed markers and shelters.

Entry to a Glacier Road

  1. Travelers reach the final fixed-ground station.
  2. The guide authority checks the current survey.
  3. Carts are unloaded or left behind.
  4. Cargo transfers to sled, pack frame, or other approved transport.
  5. Rope, shelter, fuel, and emergency food are inspected.
  6. The departure is entered in the station record.
  7. The party follows dated poles, ropes, bells, or cairns.
  8. The first remote shelter confirms arrival through its expected signal or record.

If the first shelter fails to answer, the party does not continue to the second. It returns to the station unless remaining in place is safer.

Shelter Debt

A Whiteback shelter is part of a route obligation.

A party using emergency fuel records:

  • the amount used;

  5. The road remains closed until the replacement is dated and recorded.

A rope thrown across an unexamined opening does not create a public route.

Dead Aurora Fields

The Dead Aurora Fields are a recognized Whiteback hazard landscape associated with weakened, absent, or incorrect auroral behavior.

Their exact map placement remains unresolved. The final map must place them relative to a confirmed Whiteback route, station, and safe withdrawal point before this page can claim validated spatial status.

The fields are recognized through several repeated signs:

  • auroral color fading over a defined area;
  • clear ice failing to reflect the sky correctly;
  • sound carrying poorly;
  • magical direction becoming unreliable;
  • divine symbols feeling inert or unusually cold;
  • travelers reporting dream loss.

Public Access Procedure

A public route does not cross the strongest affected ground.

Where observation is permitted:

  1. Travelers report to the responsible Whiteback station.
  2. The station records names, purpose, equipment, and expected return.
  3. The party follows ground markers rather than celestial navigation.
  4. A watcher remains outside the strongest zone.
  5. The party returns along the same marked approach.
  6. Failure to return triggers a limited rescue determined by the site’s current risk.

Teleportation, summoning, or divine contact is not accepted as the only retreat plan.

Silence Basins

Silence Basins are depressions in which sound, spirit contact, or magical communication weakens.

They are multiple sites, not one region. Each basin requires separate placement and behavior.

A usable Silence Basin record must identify:

  • the enclosing rim;
  • the entry slope;
  • the last reliable signal point;
  • the strongest affected floor;
  • the exit line;
  • the nearest safe shelter;
  • the institution responsible for access.

Inside a known basin, parties use rope and visible markers. They do not separate beyond visual range.

When a rope or marker line fails, rescuers do not enter from an improvised second direction. They restore the known line or withdraw.

No-Dream Ice

No-Dream Ice is an ice condition recorded at several northern sites.

It may cause:

  • dreamless sleep;
  • weak spirit contact;
  • missing impressions of elapsed time;
  • incomplete memory of rest;
  • difficulty determining whether a watch was maintained.

It is mapped as a hazard overlay, not a separate landform.

A camp is not placed on confirmed No-Dream Ice unless no safer ground exists. When emergency use is unavoidable, watches are doubled and recorded through physical means rather than memory alone.

Thornwake Taiga and the Boreal Reach

Thornwake Taiga is Veyrskold’s principal southern forest region. The Boreal Reach is the wider forest system represented mainly by Thornwake and its adjoining valleys.

Stormrim lies west. Whiteback lies north. Stonehold rises northeast. Greenglen lies east. Moonwell and Blackmere connect through the southeastern and southern forest.

Thornfield and Ashford Monastery are established settlements within the wider Veyrskold network. Their exact roads and regional placement must be confirmed before final route durations are stated.

Forest Structure

Thornwake contains:

  • dense evergreen forest;
  • open lichen woodland;
  • river valley;
  • peat hollow;
  • rocky ridge;
  • old clearing;
  • burned ground;
  • wet forest;
  • managed timber;
  • hunting territory;
  • monastery road.

The forest reduces wind but hides weather, distance, and route failure. A broken bridge may not be visible until the traveler reaches it.

Longwinter Forests

The Longwinter Forests are the deep, cold forest interiors where snow remains longest and permanent settlements stand farther apart.

A traveler enters Longwinter country when:

  • maintained cart road narrows;
  • shelter spacing increases;
  • clearings become less frequent;
  • river and ridge markers replace distant landmarks;
  • local hunting and cutting notices become more prominent.

The Longwinter Forests are not a second canonical region.

Forest Road Signals

Thornwake road stations maintain:

  • bridge condition;
  • snow depth;
  • timber work closures;
  • river status;
  • shelter fuel;
  • missing traveler notices;
  • hunting restrictions.

A monastery mark or route board gives the date of the last inspection. A marker without a date is not accepted as current.

Bridge Failure

When a forest bridge fails:

  1. The nearest stations close both approaches.
  2. A runner or signal reaches the next settlement.
  3. The river is assessed for boat, ford, or winter crossing.
  4. Heavy traffic returns to the last junction.
  5. A temporary crossing opens only after load and access rules are posted.

Travelers do not create an unofficial ford merely because the opposite bank is visible.

Greenglen Thawlands and the Buried Firelands

Greenglen Thawlands occupy Veyrskold’s warm-valley country.

Thornwake lies west. Stonehold rises northwest. Whiteback approaches from the north. Redgate lies east. Moonwell lies southeast.

Greenglen Hearths forms the region’s distributed settlement network. The Root Vault of Greenglen and the Greenglen Seed Trust connect the terrain directly to food security and long-term survival.

The Buried Firelands is the public cultural name for Greenglen’s geothermal landscapes. It does not describe one uninterrupted hot region.

Warm Valleys

Greenglen consists of separate warm valleys divided by cold saddles, ridges, forest, and ordinary northern ground.

Each settled valley depends on a particular combination of:

  • spring;
  • heated stream;
  • warm soil;
  • protected slope;
  • road;
  • drainage channel;
  • hearth infrastructure.

A traveler can leave one warm valley, cross a freezing saddle, and enter another.

Arrival from Thornwake

  4. Steam becomes visible from the valley approach.

Following unmarked warmth is forbidden because snow can conceal thin crust, vents, warm marsh, and collapsing ground.

Heat as Infrastructure

Greenglen heat is measured, routed, and maintained.

A settled valley separates:

  • drinking water;
  • field water;
  • bathing water;
  • industrial water;
  • ritual water;
  • water judged unsafe.

Where possible, major stores do not depend on one heat channel.

Before first frost, the Greenglen Seed Trust inspects:

  • root-vault temperature;
  • channel flow;

The nearest safe road is the marked cold-ground route, not the next visible steam plume.

Furnace Mouth is an established Veyrskold location associated with heat or old workings. Its exact parent terrain and approach must be confirmed before it is described as part of a specific Greenglen valley.

It must receive a separate spatial profile covering:

  • containing valley or mountain;
  • surface entrance;
  • heat boundary;
  • controlling institution;
  • access procedure;
  • effect on nearby roads and water.

Moonwell Basin

Moonwell Basin is enclosed southeastern interior country organized around lakes, deep wells, cairn roads, halls, fields, and descending routes.

Redgate lies above the northern approaches. Greenglen and Thornwake connect from the west. Blackmere receives the southern outflow.

Moonwell Hall is the principal named settlement and institutional center. The Moonwell Memory Houses and Moonwell Concordance connect the basin’s water and roads to identity, testimony, rescue, and public record.

Basin Rim

The rim provides the first complete view of Moonwell in clear weather.

Travelers approaching from Redgate reach a rim station before descending. The station reports:

  • basin-floor fog;
  • lake condition;
  • road damage;
  • well restrictions;
  • protected cairn activity;
  • southern outlet status.

A clear rim does not prove a clear basin floor.

Descent from Redgate

  1. The traveler leaves the final Redgate-controlled road station.
  2. The road crosses the basin rim.
  3. The lakes and lower settlements become visible if fog permits.
  4. The road descends through grazing and cairn country.
  5. A lower junction divides traffic toward Moonwell Hall, shore settlements, and southern routes.
  6. Travelers seeking protected wells or memory institutions report before leaving the public road.

Deep Wells

Moonwell’s wells are not interchangeable.

Each important well requires:

  • a protected approach;
  • a drawing area;
  • a separate place for inspection;
  • drainage that does not return contaminated water;
  • a closure method;
  • an alternate supply.

When a well closes, its water is not used for drinking, ritual, testimony, or magical examination until the responsible institution reopens it.

Memory Cairns

Moonwell cairns can record:

  • the dead;
  • rescuers;
  • witnesses;
  • failed roads;
  • households responsible for repair;
  • guest-right;
  • disputed names;
  • the winter a crossing was lost.

A cairn field must be placed on ground that can be reached, maintained, and protected from ordinary flood. It is not enough to scatter cairn symbols across a map.

Lantern Lake

Lantern Lake is an established Veyrskold natural feature or named water, but its exact relationship to Moonwell Basin remains unresolved.

It must not be placed in Moonwell merely because the name fits the basin’s reflective-water themes. Its parent region, shore settlements, routes, and water connections require confirmation on the waters page.

Blackmere Low

Blackmere Low occupies Veyrskold’s southern and southeastern low country.

Moonwell lies north. Thornwake wet forest lies west and northwest. Blackmere’s waters reach toward the southeastern coast and upper Dread Sea approaches.

Blackmere and Westhollow are the principal registered settlements. Blackmere Observatory and Westhollow Market are major named sites within the lowland network.

Lowland Structure

Blackmere consists of:

  • marsh;
  • peat;
  • reed bed;
  • dark lake;
  • narrow channel;
  • flooded forest;
  • gravel ridge;
  • old shoreline;
  • raised road;
  • artificial settlement mound.

Most buildings stand on firm islands, ridges, stone shelves, piles, or built ground. A structure on apparently dry summer soil requires proof that it remains above flood and frost movement.

Arrival from Moonwell

  1. The basin road follows the southern outlets downhill.
  2. The road rises onto a causeway as the surrounding ground becomes wetter.
  3. Bridge notices give way to ferry and channel notices.
  4. Travelers reach the first firm-market junction.
  5. Cargo transfers among cart, boat, sled, and porter according to season.
  6. The route divides toward Blackmere, Westhollow, local crossings, and southeastern water.

Goldreed Marsh

Goldreed Marsh is a named Blackmere wetland associated with reeds, fish, peat, seasonal crossing, and warmer inflow.

Its exact placement within Blackmere must be confirmed. Until then, it should be treated as a major internal feature awaiting map lock, not as automatically northwestern or adjacent to Greenglen.

A final Goldreed profile must establish:

  • which channels feed it;
  • which settlement controls the public landing;
  • where firm ground begins;
  • where warm water weakens winter ice;
  • which harvest routes are used;
  • where travelers retreat when markers fail.

Winter Crossings

Blackmere winter roads are marked only after inspection.

The opening record states:

  • route;
  • date;
  • load;
  • known spring holes;
  • nearest shelters;
  • expected travel time;
  • responsible inspectors.

A winter crossing closes after:

  • pressure damage;
  • warm inflow;
  • flooding over the surface;
  • marker loss;
  • sudden thaw;
  • unconfirmed heavy passage.

Causeway Failure

When a causeway fails:

  1. The nearest firm junction closes the approach.
  2. Westhollow Market and Blackmere receive notice.
  3. Ferries assess an alternate channel.
  4. Raised shelters receive stranded travelers.
  5. Heavy cargo returns to the previous transfer point.
  6. Reopening requires inspection of both roadbed and surrounding water.

No local shortcut becomes a public route without markers and a responsible crossing authority.

Supernatural Terrain

Veyrskold’s supernatural landscapes must be described through physical behavior.

Ruin-Silence

Ruin-silence begins at a location, not across an entire region.

A complete site record identifies:

  • the ruin or terrain anchoring it;
  • the first point where sound changes;
  • whether sound weakens or disappears;
  • whether wind, fire, animals, and speech are affected equally;
  • the safe observation point;
  • the withdrawal route.

A traveler encountering unrecorded silence marks the last normal point and returns there. Continuing inward to discover the boundary from the wrong side is not accepted practice.

Memory Snow

Memory snow is recorded by location, weather, exposure, and witnesses.

A report includes:

  • where it fell;
  • who was exposed;
  • whether memories matched;
  • whether physical evidence was present;
  • how long the effect lasted;
  • whether the snow melted normally.

The experience is not accepted automatically as legal testimony. Moonwell or another qualified institution may preserve the report while disputing its meaning.

Black Aurora

A black aurora is treated as a route condition when it affects navigation, reflection, dream, or magic.

The route authority records:

  • the visible extent;
  • time of appearance;
  • affected markers;
  • failed spells or signals;
  • reports from neighboring stations;
  • whether the condition moved.

Travel under it may be stopped even when the physical road remains intact.

Backward Wind

Backward wind is reported when smoke, loose snow, spoken sound, or carried debris moves against expected conditions.

A repeated voice carried by such wind is not used as a route command unless confirmed by a physical station or messenger.

Warm Blizzard

A warm blizzard indicates dangerous interaction between snow and heat.

It can:

  • overload roofs;
  • trigger avalanche;
  • flood low ground;
  • collapse snow over vents;
  • weaken ice rapidly.

Greenglen and Stonehold authorities close the affected slope or channel, not the entire continent.

Accessibility and Assisted Passage

Veyrskold routes are difficult, but difficulty does not excuse the absence of planned assistance.

Major route systems provide, where terrain permits:

  • harbor ramps;
  • cargo and passenger hoists;
  • broad sleds;
  • heated waiting rooms;
  • handrails;
  • wind screens;
  • animal-drawn transport;
  • porter support;
  • ferry assistance;
  • raised walks;
  • wider alternate roads;
  • rest points at shorter intervals.

A route notice identifies whether assisted passage is currently available.

A traveler who cannot use a steep Stonehold stair may use a wider freight road when open, a lift where maintained, or an escorted sled. A Blackmere traveler unable to balance on a narrow walk uses a ferry or broad causeway. A Whiteback traveler unable to maintain an ordinary glacier pace requires a shortened stage plan accepted by the guide station before departure.

When the accessible route fails, the responsible authority announces whether travelers must wait, accept assistance, use an alternate route, or shelter in place.

Requirements for the Final Terrain Map

The final terrain map must not pretend that unresolved placements are confirmed.

It must show, once locked:

The map must distinguish:

  • confirmed feature;
  • approximate feature extent;
  • seasonal ice;

  • canonical region;
  • supernatural hazard overlay;
  • restricted access boundary.

A feature without confirmed placement should not be given a precise symbol merely to make the map appear complete.

Player Orientation

Before leaving an inhabited Veyrskold settlement, a traveler should be able to answer:

  • What is the next confirmed stop?
  • Which authority maintains the route?
  • When was it last inspected?
  • Which season’s route is in use?
  • What vehicle or equipment change is required?
  • Which signal confirms the next section is open?
  • Where is the last safe place to wait?
  • What is the fallback if the route fails?
  • What shelter debt or passage obligation may be created?
  • Which named terrain feature contains the journey?

Veyrskold is survived through maintained knowledge.

A road is not open because it exists. Ice is not safe because it is white. Shelter is not free of consequence because the door was unlocked. A remembered route is not current merely because it once saved someone.

The continent remains inhabited because its people place names, warnings, stores, witnesses, and obligations between one safe place and the next.
