Coasts, Fjords, Rivers, Lakes, and Thaw Waters

Water is Veyrskold’s most changeable road.

Along the western and northwestern coast, it carries foreign ships, fishing fleets, pilots, salvage crews, rescue boats, and the vessels connecting the continent with Marithel. Thornwake’s rivers provide paths through dense forest and move timber, passengers, food, and messages. Greenglen’s springs and warm streams keep fields, hearths, workshops, and protected stores functioning through the cold. Moonwell Basin’s lakes and deep wells support communities whose law, ancestry, public testimony, and rescue records depend on protected water. Blackmere’s channels serve as waterways during thaw and can become inspected roads during stable winter. In Whiteback, water travels over, through, and beneath the ice, changing crossings and invalidating routes without changing the apparent surface above them.

No important Veyrskold waterway has one condition throughout the year.

A ferry crossing used throughout high thaw may become unnecessary when inspected lake or marsh ice opens a direct winter road. That winter road disappears during break-thaw. A harbor may remain open while its inland road closes. A warm stream may preserve a Greenglen settlement while making nearby ice too weak to carry a person. A glacier may look solid after meltwater has removed support beneath the marked road.

Before using water, travelers establish:

  1. the name and parent geography of the water;
  2. its current seasonal state;
  3. the authority responsible for the crossing, channel, harbor, or landing;
  4. the date and limits of the last inspection;
  5. the next confirmed landing, shelter, or firm road;
  6. the signal that confirms the next stage remains open;
  7. the last safe point of retreat.

This page establishes the confirmed water systems and the operating standards inherited by later regional, settlement, harbor, route, and map pages. Where controlling records do not yet establish an exact relationship, that uncertainty remains visible rather than being replaced with a convenient assumption.

Confirmed Spatial Relationships

The following relationships are established strongly enough to control later pages.

The water body and canonical region both named Stormrim Sound remain separate entities. The water contains channels, fjords, harbor approaches, islands, and anchorages. The region also contains settlements, roads, coastal land, institutions, and inland approaches organized around that water.

Spatial Relationships Requiring Adoption

The following relationships remain unresolved and must be fixed through the regional water map, settlement-placement page, route registry, or a recorded canon decision.

Stormrim Maritime Relationships

The final map must determine:

  • the exact boundary between Stormrim Sound and the open Ocean of Storms;
  • whether Iceflow Bay lies within Stormrim Sound, opens from it, or occupies a neighboring coastal section;
  • the cardinal relationship between Iceflow Bay and Silverwake Sound;
  • where Stormrim Sound gives way to the Black Ice Coast;
  • which islands divide the inner sound from outer pilot water;
  • which named harbor or fjord contains Stormrim Haven;
  • whether Icebell Quay is a district of Stormrim Haven, an adjacent settlement, or a separate quay elsewhere in the Stormrim network;
  • the exact relationship between Drowned Lantern Anchorage and the harbor or route it supports.

Interior Water Relationships

The final inland water map must determine:

  • Lantern Lake’s parent region;
  • whether Brightmere stands on Lantern Lake or another named water;
  • the major Thornwake watercourses and their mouths;
  • the watercourse serving Ashford Monastery;
  • the exact source and receiving water of Greymill Underfall and Underfall Wheel;
  • the relationship among Hollowford, Blue Ford, and Hollowford Under-Ice Crossing;
  • the number, location, and outflow of Moonwell Basin’s major lakes and wells;
  • Goldreed Marsh’s position within Blackmere Low;
  • the source of Goldreed’s buried-fire influence;
  • the navigable channels connecting Blackmere, Westhollow, Blackmere Crossing, and the southeastern coast.

These unresolved relationships do not prevent the page from defining how a harbor, river, lake, marsh, or crossing must operate. They do prevent those operating standards from being attached to unsupported exact geometry.

The Waters Around Veyrskold

Veyrskold lies between the northern Ocean of Storms and cold waters connected to the upper Dread Sea.

Its western and northwestern coast carries the strongest concentration of public maritime infrastructure. Stormrim Sound, Iceflow Bay, Silverwake Sound, and the Black Ice Coast belong to one broad western and northern maritime system, but their exact boundaries and sequence remain provisional until the regional water map is adopted.

The southeastern coast receives drainage from Blackmere Low through one or more channels that remain to be mapped. It supports local fisheries, patrol movement, shallow-draft trade, coastal transfer, and limited foreign contact. It does not possess the same confirmed concentration of deep fjords and major international harbor infrastructure as Stormrim.

The northern coast becomes progressively more difficult to separate into fixed land, sea, and ice. Public charts show maintained approaches, recognized refuges, known island groups, and places where local pilots become mandatory. They do not present every visible opening as a usable channel.

Western Maritime System

The western and northern maritime system includes:

  • outer Ocean of Storms approaches;
  • Stormrim Sound;
  • the Stormrim Coast;
  • inhabited fjord waters;
  • Iceflow Bay;
  • Silverwake Sound;
  • the Black Ice Coast;
  • Seal-Singer island waters;
  • Coastal Ice Lanes;
  • the northern intercontinental route toward Marithel.

The exact sequence among these waters must be established through the final coastal map. Until that map exists, route descriptions use confirmed endpoints and authorities rather than assumed intermediate geometry.

Southeastern Maritime System

The southeastern system broadly follows this relationship:

The number and course of the outlets remain unresolved. Blackmere’s regional map must establish which are navigable, which are seasonal, and which reach public coastal landings.

Stormrim Sound

Stormrim Sound is a network of fjords, cold harbors, island approaches, channels, wreck waters, fisheries, and ice-season routes along Veyrskold’s western or northwestern coast.

For navigation and later map design, it can be understood through several functional water zones. These are planning categories rather than newly named subregions.

Outer Pilot Waters

The outer pilot waters lie between open ocean and the first confirmed protected channels.

They contain:

  • first-sighting positions;
  • offshore waiting water;
  • open-ocean swell;
  • pilot boarding points;
  • storm-warning stations;
  • reef and wreck hazards;
  • drifting ice;
  • refuge approaches.

A foreign vessel reports before crossing the inner hazard line. Seeing a harbor light does not establish that the channel between the vessel and the light remains open.

Island Approaches

Islands, rocks, reefs, and headlands divide the transition from open sea into a limited number of usable approaches.

These approaches may contain:

  • beacons;
  • bells;
  • pilot shelters;
  • rescue craft;
  • warning shrines;
  • emergency stores;
  • protected lee water.

A final Stormrim map must identify which islands are inhabited, which carry signals, and which create route divisions.

Inner Sound Waters

Inner sound waters carry:

  • fishing traffic;
  • settlement ferries;
  • cargo movement;
  • local coastal vessels;
  • rescue boats;
  • vessels waiting for a fjord or harbor assignment.

They are more sheltered from ocean swell but may concentrate wind, current, fog, and moving ice.

Fjord Waters

Fjord waters extend inland between steep slopes, cliffs, islands, or high coastal ground.

They contain settlements at:

  • fjord heads;
  • river mouths;
  • protected bends;
  • side valleys;
  • broad shore terraces;
  • coves screened from outer weather.

Northern Coastal Transition

The northern transition is the area in which Stormrim’s established harbor and pilot network gives way to less densely settled waters associated with Iceflow Bay, Silverwake Sound, the Black Ice Coast, or the Seal-Singer routes.

The final map must identify where this transition begins and which institutions maintain continuity across it.

Stormrim Pilot League

The Stormrim Pilot League maintains the principal public pilot network of Stormrim Sound and may operate farther north where local compacts permit.

Its water responsibilities include:

  • certifying pilots;
  • keeping current approach records;
  • recording reef, depth, wreck, and ice changes;
  • declaring pilot-only conditions;
  • assigning waiting or refuge water;
  • coordinating with harbor offices;
  • investigating failed navigation signals;
  • supporting maritime rescue.

The League controls navigation procedure and public route safety. It does not automatically own shorelines, fisheries, islands, wrecks, or salvage rights.

A vessel entering League-controlled water receives a route instruction valid for a specific approach, date, vessel type, and condition. That instruction does not authorize movement through every northern water.

Storm-Bell Shrines

Storm-Bell Shrines maintain mercy and warning stations along exposed coast and water routes.

Their functions may include:

  • warning of an approaching storm;
  • reporting a vessel in distress;
  • calling rescue crews;
  • announcing that a refuge cannot be used;
  • warning that a shore road has closed;
  • marking a death or unresolved disappearance at sea.

Shrine signals are coordinated with neighboring pilot and harbor stations but remain distinct from technical navigation codes.

The exact bell pattern used at a particular station belongs on the harbor, shrine, or communication page responsible for that station. Every local code must still establish:

  • who sounds it;
  • what it means;
  • who must answer;
  • what failure to answer requires.

Stormrim Fjords

The inhabited fjords are commonly associated with the Frostmere Fjords cultural landscape. They remain within the Stormrim Sound region rather than forming another canonical region.

A major inhabited fjord normally contains several of the following elements:

  1. a mouth between headlands or islands;
  2. one or more navigational narrows;
  3. sheltered inner water;
  4. side settlements or anchorages;
  5. a fjord head;
  6. a river or meltwater mouth;
  7. a shore road;
  8. an upper road around cliffs or unstable shore;
  9. an inland route toward Thornwake or Stonehold.

Not every fjord has every element in the same order.

Fjord Boundaries

The water body begins at the line between the outer headlands, islands, or navigational marks defining its mouth.

Its wider cultural and economic influence continues inland through the river valley, road, fishery, market, and shelter network serving that water.

The water boundary and the jurisdictional boundary may therefore differ.

Fjord Movement

Water Route

Boats carry passengers and goods among the mouth, side settlements, anchorages, and fjord head.

This is usually the fastest high-thaw route where wind and landing access permit.

Shore Road

A shore road follows stable ground above tide, ordinary flood, and expected ice-push.

It may become a sled road during winter.

Upper Road

An upper road passes inland around:

  • cliffs;
  • avalanche ground;
  • tidal flats;
  • broken shore;
  • unstable ice;
  • blocked lower road.

It is slower but may remain available when water travel closes.

Fjord Planning Standards

The following are continent-scale planning bands. They guide later route generation and do not replace settlement-to-settlement records.

These assumptions require ordinary weather, an open route, appropriate craft, and no inspection delay.

Stormrim Haven

Stormrim Haven is Veyrskold’s principal foreign-facing maritime settlement within the Stormrim Sound geography.

Its exact fjord, shore position, and relationship to Icebell Quay and Drowned Lantern Anchorage remain to be resolved. Its final map must nevertheless provide all spatial components required of a major harbor.

Required Harbor Components

The Stormrim Haven map must place:

  • outer sighting water;
  • an outer waiting position;
  • a pilot boarding point;
  • a navigable approach channel;
  • one or more hazard lines;
  • protected harbor water;
  • public passenger arrival;
  • cargo quay;
  • fishing landing;
  • damaged-vessel berth;
  • refuge capacity;
  • freshwater access;
  • winter facilities;
  • transfer space above flood and ice-push;
  • inland road and sled connections;
  • waiting areas for vessels denied immediate entry.

These components must relate physically. A cargo quay without a route to storage does not function. A passenger landing reached only by a cargo ladder does not provide public arrival. A waiting anchorage without a safe route back to open water is a trap rather than a refuge.

Arrival Procedure

  1. A vessel reaches the assigned outer reporting water.
  2. It raises its identity and request signal.
  3. A Pilot League or harbor station returns the current approach condition.
  4. The vessel proceeds to the assigned pilot position or remains in waiting water.
  5. A pilot boards or leads from a local craft when required.
  6. The vessel follows the currently marked channel.
  7. Harbor officers assign an anchorage, quay, refuge berth, or inspection position.
  8. Passengers use the public landing.
  9. Cargo enters the transfer and storage system.
  10. Inland departure occurs only after the receiving road or route office confirms capacity.

A vessel receiving no answer does not infer permission.

Separate Water and Land Status

Stormrim Haven reports water and inland access separately.

The harbor may be:

  • open;
  • pilot-only;
  • open only for refuge;
  • open only to local craft;
  • restricted to an outer anchorage;
  • closed.

The inland routes may separately be:

  • open to carts;
  • open to sleds;
  • open only to pack traffic;
  • restricted to emergency cargo;
  • closed.

A vessel may enter while its cargo remains stored because the receiving road has failed.

Visibility and Signal Requirements

The final harbor map must identify:

  • where a vessel first becomes visible;
  • which station sees it;
  • which stations can communicate with one another;
  • where cliffs, islands, fog, or fjord bends interrupt the chain;
  • which signal medium is used under each condition;
  • which link becomes pilot-only if a station fails.

Icebell Quay

Icebell Quay is a named Veyrskold maritime site associated with ice-season transfer.

Its exact relationship to Stormrim Haven remains unresolved. It may later be adopted as a Stormrim Haven district, an adjacent settlement, or another quay within the Stormrim coastal network.

Required Functions

Its final page must establish facilities for:

  • ice-capable local vessels;
  • winter fishing craft;
  • shore-ice transfer;
  • sled loading;
  • ice cutting;
  • cold-storage cargo;
  • pilots or crews waiting for northern assignments;
  • passengers who cannot use unstable shore ice;
  • emergency withdrawal when pressure changes.

Required Signal Categories

The quay’s public signal system must distinguish:

  • normal entry;
  • pilot required;
  • inspected winter landing open;
  • pressure-ice warning;
  • immediate withdrawal;
  • full closure.

The exact number, rhythm, and medium of the signals remain to be established on the Icebell Quay page.

Drowned Lantern Anchorage

Drowned Lantern Anchorage is a named anchorage, waiting place, refuge, or controlled maritime approach.

Its exact relationship to Stormrim Haven, Iceflow Bay, or another Stormrim route remains unresolved.

A functional anchorage must contain:

  • an identifiable approach;
  • dependable holding water;
  • a danger line;
  • contact with shore or a signal station;
  • a route back to open water;
  • an onward route;
  • a procedure for transferring an injured person;
  • a rule governing passenger landing;
  • enough separation from the active channel that waiting vessels do not obstruct traffic.

It must lie close enough to communicate with the harbor or route it supports while remaining outside water that cannot safely hold waiting vessels.

Failure Procedure

When the anchorage’s expected signal fails:

  1. incoming vessels remain outside the danger line;
  2. the connected harbor or route office receives warning;
  3. a pilot or rescue craft checks the anchorage when conditions permit;
  4. vessels use the previous confirmed waiting water;
  5. emergency entry occurs only when remaining outside is more dangerous.

No numeric travel time is assigned until the anchorage and supported harbor are placed on the map.

Iceflow Bay

Iceflow Bay belongs to Veyrskold’s western or northern maritime system.

Its exact boundary and relationship to Stormrim Sound and Silverwake Sound remain provisional.

Seasonal Operation

High Thaw

The bay functions primarily as open water. Vessels use marked approaches, anchorages, fisheries, and transfer landings.

Freeze-Up

Shore ice forms before the central water becomes dependable winter ground. Slush and moving sheets can close a landing while deeper water remains passable.

Deep Winter

Inspected portions of protected inner water may support:

  • winter landings;
  • temporary cargo transfer;
  • sled approaches;
  • marked shore routes.

Open or moving water may remain elsewhere in the bay.

Break-Thaw

Detached shore ice, pressure cracks, flooded surface, and moving fragments close ordinary winter access.

Pressure Line

The final bay map must identify the furthest ordinary shoreward reach of piled or moving ice.

Permanent structures stand above or behind it. Temporary winter facilities below the line require daily inspection and an immediate withdrawal route.

When pressure reaches the marked line:

  1. the winter landing closes;
  2. animals and passengers leave the exposed surface;
  3. movable equipment is brought inland;
  4. the water approach is inspected separately;
  5. traffic is redirected to the last confirmed harbor or refuge.

Required Route Resolution

The route page must establish:

  • the nearest major Stormrim harbor;
  • the nearest Silverwake pilot station, if Silverwake is adopted as adjacent;
  • ordinary sailing time from both;
  • winter shore access;
  • fallback harbor;
  • authority maintaining the route.

Silverwake Sound

Silverwake Sound is a named Veyrskold water associated with pilots, salvage, cold navigation, under-ice hazards, and auroral conditions.

It is distinct from Stormrim Sound.

Its cardinal relationship to Stormrim Sound, Iceflow Bay, the Black Ice Coast, and the Seal-Singer routes must be locked by the regional maritime map.

Required Internal Structure

The final Silverwake map must place:

  • southern or landward approaches;
  • principal deep-water channel;
  • islands or reefs affecting navigation;
  • refuge water;
  • salvage grounds;
  • northern or outward transfer points;
  • signal pairs;
  • locations where local pilotage becomes mandatory.

No vessel continues beyond the last confirmed signal pair without direct local pilotage.

Open water is not sufficient. A channel may open into fog, moving ice, reefs, or water with no safe turning position.

Salvage

A salvage party records:

  • wreck position;
  • depth;
  • current;
  • ice movement;
  • distance from the public channel;
  • nearest safe anchorage;
  • bodies or records reported aboard;
  • ownership or competing claim;
  • whether the wreck obstructs navigation.

Salvage authority and navigation authority remain separate.

Under-Ice Routes

A recognized under-ice route requires:

  • inspected entry;
  • inspected exit;
  • air or surface access;
  • a guide;
  • current condition record;
  • emergency retreat;
  • a rule for closing the route when one end cannot be confirmed.

A route whose exit has not been checked closes from both ends.

Black Ice Coast

The Black Ice Coast occupies Veyrskold’s exposed northern maritime edge and adjoins one or more waters associated with Silverwake and the Seal-Singer routes.

Its exact southern beginning and offshore boundary remain provisional.

It is characterized by:

  • dark rock;
  • shore ice;
  • sea caves;
  • narrow coves;
  • exposed landings;
  • broken islands;
  • steep inland approaches;
  • limited rescue infrastructure.

Public Landing Requirements

A public landing must provide:

  • a marked approach;
  • water suitable for the approved craft;
  • shore above ordinary tide and ice movement;
  • a way to secure the craft;
  • firm arrival ground;
  • an inland route;
  • refuge or shelter;
  • a recorded onward stage;
  • assisted transfer where the landing serves general travelers.

A beach where a small boat can touch land is not automatically a public landing.

Refuge Spacing

Maintained coastwise routes must establish refuge spacing appropriate to:

  • vessel type;
  • ordinary weather;
  • darkness;
  • rescue range;
  • available shelter;
  • the length of an ordinary local sailing stage.

Beyond the maintained chain, travelers require local guidance and carried shelter sufficient for an unplanned landing.

Sea Caves

A sea cave counts as refuge only when it has:

  • a known upper-water mark;
  • stable roof;
  • dry standing ground;
  • retreat above the shore-ice line;
  • inspected access;
  • a record of the conditions under which it cannot be used.

Coastal Ice Lanes

The Coastal Ice Lanes connect the maintained Stormrim coastal network with northern coastal and island waters.

They are seasonal coastal routes rather than permanent channels.

Their exact endpoints remain to be fixed after the relationships among Stormrim Sound, Iceflow Bay, Silverwake Sound, the Black Ice Coast, and the Seal-Singer route heads are adopted.

Opening a Lane

A lane opens only after responsible stations confirm:

  • current water or ice channel;
  • refuge availability;
  • signal continuity;
  • moving-ice direction;
  • forecast wind;
  • fog conditions;
  • vessel requirements;
  • shore support.

A report of open water is insufficient.

Authorities

Possible authorities include:

  • Stormrim Pilot League;
  • harbor watches;
  • Storm-Bell Shrines;
  • rescue crews;
  • northern local pilots;
  • island communities maintaining the next route leg.

The route page must identify responsibility for each leg rather than assigning the whole network to one office.

Closure

A lane closes when:

  • fog removes the next signal;
  • moving ice blocks refuge;
  • pressure develops against shore;
  • a storm threatens the turning water;
  • the next pilot station cannot answer;
  • rescue craft cannot operate.

Vessels already within the lane proceed to the nearest confirmed refuge.

Island Song Routes

The Island Song Routes connect northern Veyrskold coastal waters with the Seal-Singer Isles.

The Seal-Singer Isles are Veyrskold cultural landscapes and island communities. They are distinct from Marithel’s Northward Isles.

Their Veyrskold landward route heads lie among the Black Ice Coast and northern coastal waters, but individual route heads remain to be placed with the island settlements.

The route songs organize remembered relationships among:

  • island profiles;
  • tide;
  • current;
  • fog;
  • echo;
  • bird movement;
  • ice;
  • refuge;
  • safe turning points;
  • season.

They do not replace physical navigation.

A route sung in the wrong season does not authorize passage. The singer or pilot declares which seasonal route version is being used.

Travel Scale

The route is multi-stage and season-dependent.

Its final route record must establish:

  • named island endpoints;
  • coastal departure points;
  • refuge stops;
  • ordinary duration;
  • weather delay;
  • pilot transfer;
  • seasonal closure;
  • return routes.

Northern Marithel–Veyrskold Sea Route

The northern intercontinental route connects Veyrskold’s western or northern harbor network with Marithel’s Northward Isles.

Its Veyrskold approach may use Stormrim, Silverwake, or other northern pilot waters depending on the final adopted maritime placement and seasonal conditions.

Its duration is measured in days or weeks rather than hours.

The route record must identify:

  • approved Veyrskold departure harbors;
  • Maritheli arrival harbors;
  • pilot exchanges;
  • refuge waters;
  • vessel assumptions;
  • storm waiting;
  • ice conditions;
  • lighthouse or signal dependencies;
  • seasonal closure.

No exact duration is canonical until vessel performance and map scale are adopted.

Thornwake River Corridors

Thornwake Taiga contains multiple rivers connecting highland slopes, forest settlements, monastery roads, timber grounds, Greenglen approaches, Stormrim fjords, Moonwell routes, and Blackmere wetlands.

The controlling records do not yet establish a complete named river system.

This page therefore uses functional corridors rather than introducing unsupported river names.

Ashford Monastery Watercourse

Ashford Monastery requires:

  • a dependable drinking-water source;
  • a crossing or landing;
  • a route connecting water and monastery road;
  • flood-safe ground;
  • a winter access plan;
  • a downstream relationship to surrounding settlements.

The exact river, direction of flow, mouth, and named crossings remain unresolved.

The settlement-placement page must establish whether the monastery stands:

  • directly on a river;
  • above a tributary;
  • beside a ford;
  • near a spring feeding a larger watercourse.

Greymill Underfall Watercourse

Greymill Underfall and Underfall Wheel require flowing water descending from higher country.

The water system must establish:

  • upstream source zone;
  • fall or steep descent;
  • wheel intake;
  • bypass or overflow;
  • lower landing;
  • road bridge;
  • flood refuge;
  • winter crossing, if one exists;
  • receiving river, fjord, marsh, or lake.

Its name, complete course, and receiving water remain unresolved.

The Deepwell Listening Shaft and Greymill Lower Doors remain separate locations within the wider Greymill geography.

Hollowford Crossing Water

Hollowford is associated with a ford and a winter or under-ice crossing.

Blackmere’s lowland waters ultimately reach the southeastern coast through one or more channels that remain to be mapped.

The coast differs from Stormrim.
